The South Dakota Geographic Alliance (SDGA) was founded in 1992. Its primary emphasis has been teacher education. More than 1,000 South Dakota educators have taken one or more course(s) for academic credit.

The Alliance had a peak membership of approximately 1,000 teachers, including about 140 Teacher Consultants. Approximately 35 teachers have earned, taken all credits toward, or currently are working on Master of Science degrees in Geography. Thirty-five educators have taken Alliance courses to become certified to teach AP Human Geography.

Today, the SDGA is reforming the organization under new leadership and is reassessing the needs of K-12 educators in South Dakota. We are seeking interested parties from across the state to join a new Steering Committee that will develop a new mission and vision for the SDGA, and develop goals which the SDGA will then implement.

The purpose of the SDGA is to strengthen geographic literacy in South Dakota. We are interested in helping K-12 educators and administrators bring geographic critical thinking skills into the classroom. In the future we will be supporting classrooms with materials, training, and in other ways
