The South Carolina Geographic Alliance celebrated its 20th year in 2009/2010. Three coordinators, Dr. Richard Silvernail, Dr. Charles Kovacik, and Dr. Jerry Mitchell, all geography faculty at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, have led Alliance activities.

Annually, the Alliance produces in-service and pre-service workshops, specialty workshops and institutes, and high-quality curriculum materials. In the past fiscal year the Alliance conducted 30 workshops at 13 different teacher-training institutions, 20 in-service workshops, 2 Geofest conferences, 2 university courses, an AP Human Geography workshop, a one-week geospatial technology institute, a two-week geography summer institute, and gave 28 presentations at professional conferences.

Our vision is to see South Carolina students become geographically literate and adept spatial thinkers. The mission of the South Carolina Geographic Alliance is to provide South Carolina students and educators with innovative and effective practices, materials, and research to improve geography education. The Alliance advocates for an informed, geographically-literate population able to participate and compete as responsible citizens within a global economy.
