Promoting a higher quality and quantity of geo-literacy and geographic education in the Ocean State
The Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance (RIGEA) was established in 1991 to increase and improve the teaching of geography in Rhode Island schools by founders Chester Smolski and Anne Petry. The alliance has been hosted by Rhode Island College since it began 20 years ago. Its membership consists of K-12 teachers, but membership is open to everyone.
The Alliance is part of a network initiated by the National Geographic Society, which now includes all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada. RIGEA envisions a geographically literate citizenry in Rhode Island., and our mission is to ensure geography content and methods of inquiry are taught in K-12 and pre-service teacher programs.
