The Puerto Rico Geographic Alliance was established in 1991. Dr. José Molinelli and Dr. Lillian Bird serve as Coordinators of the Puerto Rico Geographic Alliance, and as such are responsible for overseeing all Alliance endeavors, which include educational policy, professional development and proposal writing activities. Both Coordinators are professors at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras (UPR-Río Piedras) and have served as Alliance Coordinators since the Alliance was first established.

Administrative support for the Alliance is provided by the host institution (UPR-Río Piedras) through its Finance and Accounting offices. The host institution also supports Alliance activities by allowing the use of educational facilities for teacher training activities.
