Geographic Literacy: To Be Rather Than to Seem
The North Carolina Geographic (NCGA) was formed in 1987 and has since been a voice for geography education in North Carolina. Over the years the NCGA has successfully lobbied for geography content in the K-12 curriculum. Outreach to teachers through professional development in geography, materials, and publication has been a cornerstone of the Alliance.
The North Carolina Geographic Alliance has as its mission: to educate legislators and education decision makers on the state and local levels about the relevance of geography in the 21st Century, to cultivate an awareness of the relevance and importance of geography among teachers, parents of students, and the public at large, to provide quality professional development in geography content and pedagogy to K-12 teachers, and to provide interdisciplinary materials for classroom teachers and educators to use with students to enhance geographic concepts within the curriculum.
