The Mississippi Geographic Alliance (MGA) was created in 1989 in partnership with the National Geographic Society for the purpose of improving geography education in Mississippi. Through most of the 1990s, the Alliance conducted summer institutes that trained teachers in geography content and teaching methods. Over 200 teachers were trained and many of them received advanced training to become Teacher Consultants (TCs) who conducted additional professional development activities for teachers in their local schools and districts.
Since 2009, MGA has strengthened its organizational capacity by having an up-to-date membership database; implementing membership recruitment strategies; providing consistent communications with members through email lists, a newsletter, and social networking; improving monitoring and evaluation tools; reaching out to non-traditional groups such as non-formal education groups, businesses, and community groups; reestablishing oversight bodies including the MGA Steering Committee and MGA Advisory Council; establishing systems for diversifying MGA's funding base; and continuing to provide high-quality professional development to K-12 educators in Mississippi.
