The Michigan Geographic Alliance began in 1989, and Dr. Joseph Stoltman and Dr. Michael Libbee have been Co-coordinators since its inception. The mission of the MGA has been to provide high-quality, affordable geography in-service workshops and products for teachers.

Over the past 22 years the Michigan Geographic Alliance has provided approximately 7,000 hours of professional development for close to 80,000 participants. MGA has trained over 300 Teacher Consultants and produced and distributed lesson plans, maps, posters, and CDs to teachers across the state and nation. Teacher Consultants work on curriculum, present workshops, and have become teacher leaders in Michigan.

The MGA is one of the largest and most active geographic alliances in the United States. In a typical year, the Alliance sponsors approximately 100 professional development workshops, 60 Family Geography Challenge workshops, and several one- to two-week summer institutes in which teachers hone their knowledge and skills in teaching geography.
