Geo-literacy and liberty!
The Massachusetts Geographic Alliance was established in 1988 when 70 teachers and university professors attended a first meeting at Salem State College. Since then, it has grown to be a significant provider of professional development for geography educators. For 24 years, the Alliance has provided professional development to K-12 teachers through programs ranging from a three-hour after school session to a two-week summer institute.
Alliance Steering Committee members have worked with the Massachusetts Council for Social Studies to push for improved social studies teaching in the state through state level curriculum reform committees and through the annual NERC conference. Our most important role, as we see it, is to work towards an expanded role for geography in Massachusetts K-12 schools.
