Dedicated to the Teaching of Geography in the State of Illinois
Founded in 1987, the purpose of the Illinois Geographic Alliance (IGA) is the promotion and enhancement of geographic knowledge in the schools and among the general populace of Illinois. To achieve this purpose, the Alliance maintains a strong grassroots organization of geographic educators from schools and universities, participates in educational reform at the district, state, and national levels. We engage in an active program of pre-service and in-service teacher education, develop curriculum materials based on the National Geography Standards, and foster public awareness of the importance of geography in our society.
The IGA organizes an annual conference focused on AP Human Geography for in-service and pre-service secondary education teachers. The IGA is working with Illinois State University to develop the Online Illinois Classroom Atlas, a first-of-its kind, free, interactive resource for use in K-16 classrooms. In addition, the IGA is developing new programs to support geospatial technology education, including GPS and computer mapping.
The IGA provides free resources for teachers, including lesson plans, maps, posters, books, and games, through our website and resource room on the campus of Illinois State University.
IGA membership is free. To become a member of the IGA, simply fill out our online membership form.
